Question

assalamulaykum,
dear mufti saab (and helpers),
i was hoping if you could answer the following question, the question topic is related to medicine and halaal/haraam.

Both my paretns are arthritic (have arthristis), and so they get a lot of problems with their joints.  i am still fairly young, but i am also beginning to get problems with some of my joints.  i have been recommended to take codliver oil (with primrose oil), as it provides the joints with relief and comfort.  i find that the oil has a very vile taste, and althogh it is beneficial for me, i find it very uncomfortable taking the medicine/oil.  there is an alternative: cod live oil tablets.  i have been unable to find cod liver oil tablets that do not contain gelatine (although, i have been informed that gelatine-less tablets are/were once available).  is it permissable to take the tablet from of the medicine even though it conatins gelatine? and what is the ruling in shariat for issues of this nature? the medicine does provide me with some relief, but the thought of taking the oil form daily is unbearble.  could you please reccomend to me what steps to take, and what to do?

jaza kallah and thank you very much for your time,
signed. a muslim brother

In the Name of Allah, the Inspirer of Truth.
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

JazakAllah for your inquiry.

We regard gelatine capsules (from non Dhabihaah sources) for medicinal use as permissible even if there are Halaal alternatives present.  In that case, you may take benefit from the medicines.

If one wishes to pursue the path of caution based on a personal choice, then this is always a commendable decision though not a must based on Fatwaa.

And Allah knows Best
