Halaal Ham Pizzas?

Published: 2003-08-31
A local pizza delivery shop in my city has posted a pamphlet through my door. It boasts that "All our meat is Halal". Yet, in its list of choices of toppings it lists "Pork", "Sausages" "Ham" and "Peperoni",

I was more than a bit puzzled. As far as I knew, products from "That certain" animal were forbidden in Islam, so how can this company be offering meat from unclean animals as clean?

Thank you in advance Regards

Assalamooalaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh Respected SisterBrother

Hereunder is the response to your query:

Thank you for your question, however I do so believe that your question would be better levelled at this local Pizza Company. As a (potential) customer, you are entitled to demand answers to these questions for piece of mind.

We can only comment generally on this case. Please take note of the following points:

(a) If the local pizza delivery place (which uses meat) is operated by non-Muslims without a doubt there can be no confidence in their label of Halaal. Even if we were to assume that the meat was Halaal then we can never be sure that there would be no contamination with Haraam meat and also can we be sure that the non-Muslims would always buy from Halaal suppliers. Notwithstanding, there are many jurisprudential rules to ensure that Halaal reaches the Muslims as halaal , clearly we cannot rely on non-Muslims to adhere to such rulings from a-z.

(b) If it is run by a Muslim then you may find out from reliable Muslims whether they supply sausages from Halaal sources. Sausages are not exclusive to pork, for example, you can buy halaal mutton, chicken or beef sausages. For ham, pork or pepperoni, ascertain whether they are using pork or whether they are halaal substitutes but advertised as 'pork', 'ham' etc. Notwithstanding, the use of the words ham, pork and pepperoni are severely reprehensible and deplorable, to say the least. Read the definitions of these: pork: Meat from a domestic hog or pig Pepperoni: A pork and beef sausage (or a thin slice of this sausage) ham: Meat cut from the thigh of a hog (usually smoked)

Probably they would be advertising as such to attract non-Muslim customers, nevertheless pork and its derivatives are strictly forbidden (haraam), to even name 'Halaal' as pork is in itself a grave sin hence why a Muslim would ever wish to employ such tactics is beyond us. Allah save us! This tactic would be enough for true Muslims to shun such places and to let them know of our disgust at such practices. It is truly unbecoming of a Muslim to employ such methods. Just reading the meaning of these names produces a shudder in a true Muslim.
